Web Design & Development Process – A Step by Step Guide

Web Design Lifecycle Flow Chart

In the modern digital environment, a website is the face of any business. A well-structured website with user-friendly design adds value to a business, increases footfalls and leads to business growth and development. It is therefore critical that a lot of focus be given to this aspect. It is all the more important today as consumers prefer to check websites, compare prices offered by different companies before settling on a purchase, regardless of the products or services opted for.

web design development

Building a website is not easy and its lifecycle goes through several vital stages. However, given that it is so crucial for any business, the first step for any organization needing a website is to select a top-end and leading web design and development agency with long years of experience in this field. This one aspect alone can make or break your business as the difference between an excellently designed website and a subpar one is one of business growth and a catastrophe respectively.

Why Process is important for us?

Doynt Technologies is a well-known web design and development agency and has been delivering consistent and optimized services to clients. No work is too little or too big for us and we can boast of having small start-ups as well as Fortune 500 companies as our clients.

In this post, we will focus on a step-by-step guide to web design development and the processes we follow to ensure that you, the client, get a heightened user experience.

Research and Information Gathering

No website can be the same and even ones in the same industry will differ from each other. Every company has its own unique characteristics and this should reflect on the website. Hence our process starts with research and information gathering about your company and an evaluation of your exclusive requirements.

Based on this research we will be able to evaluate your business goals and objectives which ultimately should be met through the website. For this, we will have detailed and several rounds of discussions with you even before we initiate the early steps. Some of the critical factors that we take into account are –

  • Goals – What do you want to achieve from your site? For e-commerce sites, the objective will be sales only with in-built secured payment gateways. For others, it will be mostly information sharing and informing clients in details about the products and services offered by you. This is what the purpose of your site is all about.
  • Target Audience – Will you be catering to a specific group of people to reach your goals? Will you be exclusively dealing with a definite age-group or gender? The success of your site will depend largely on whether you meet the expectations of your target audience through your newly-developed site and will largely dictate the design of the site.
  • Content – The kind of information that has to be conveyed through your website should sync with the requirements of your target audience. Regardless of whether it is details of offers or online orders, the content has to match your business.

Apart from these aspects, we also carry out a market survey of websites of similar businesses in the industry as well as the websites of your competitors to determine what has made them successful.

Planning and Preparation

With the information and data collected from research, we then move on to an area where a framework or site map of the proposed website is to be devised. The sitemap lists out all the areas of the website that has to be included as well as any sub-topics if required.

This is critical as it serves as a guide during the actual process of design and development. It also helps to keep track of the project and evaluate the stages of completion. It enables us to keep you updated of the progress made and acts as a benchmark to create a site that has a good user-interface, easy navigability, and a good user experience.

During the planning stage, our team of designers and developers get together and discuss what tools and technologies to use that will best match the final outcome of your site. Doynt uses the latest technologies to ensure that you get the most optimized site possible depending on your needs.

Some of them include CMS (Content Management System), WordPress, HTML (HyperText Markup Language), CSS (Cascading Style Sheets), JavaScript, Ajax (Asynchronous JavaScript and XML), jQuery (JavaScript Framework Library – commonly used in Ajax development), MooTools (JavaScript Framework Library – commonly used in Ajax development).

With such technologies at our disposal, we are able to assure a well-functioning and optimized site.

The Design Stage

At this point of time, our designers develop the “feel” of the site and an approximation of what the final appearance will be. The key factors that will be taken into account are the parameters discussed above – the purpose of the site, the target audience, demographics, and gender. A site that is technology based will have all the information about it in a subdued and a thought-provoking manner so as to invoke the curiosity of the academics.

UI/UX Wireframe

On the other hand, where teenagers are the target, the site will be more colorful and fun with a lot of graphics and photos. At this stage, the important business elements such as the logo and colors of the company will also be incorporated to establish the character of the site to match company identity.

Doynt designers will work closely with you to finalize the design. We believe in keeping you in the loop continually so that the design element, which will be a springboard to website development, can be decided. We first create prototype designs for the website which is typically a .jpg image of the final version.

This will be sent to you through emails but in certain circumstances, we do give our clients access to a secure area where you can see and evaluate the work in progress. You can offer suggestions, express your likes and dislikes and share your opinion with our developers and designers until the final prototype is ready and the site can be developed based on it.

The Development Stage

This is the point where the functionalities of a website are created. The designer will use all the graphic elements that have been used in the prototype to finalize the site. We start the process by structuring the Home Page and then progressively going on to developing the “shell” of the other content and landing pages as the main navigational structure will be based on these pages. After the shell has been completed the pages will be filled up with content as per your requirements of the various information that you want to convey to your clients.

Web Development

All the specific aspects are made functional at this phase depending on the nature of your site. These comprise of “Call to Action” buttons, interactive contact forms, shopping cart if it is an e-commerce site and other specific features. Our developers will closely interact with you so that any changes or corrections can be implemented. On the development front, our web developers will write the valid HTML or CSS code as per the standard web standards which optimize functionality and opens up the site to a large target audience.

Testing and Deployment

Testing the website is a key element that takes into account a large number of factors. Our testers go through the functionality of scripts and other forms, compatibility issues with different browsers if any so that the site can be viewed on the latest advance browsers too.  It will be further tested that all codes written for the site have been validated so that your site meets current standards and benchmarks.

Once these steps are done, an FTP (File Transfer Protocol) program will be run to upload the site files to your server. We will then run the site once to ensure that your site is fully functional. Your website is now complete, marking the official launch of the site as it can now be viewed by your clients.

Additionally, at the deployment stage, we take care of SEO (Search Engine Optimization) which is an integral part of an online digital marketing process. It ensures that your site will be highly visible online and be on the top of results pages of all major search engines so that people looking for your products and services arrive quickly at your site. Your website efficiency comes to naught if it is not optimized for online visibility and presence.

Post Deployment – Maintenance

As part of optimized customer service, Doynt Technologies takes the post-deployment and maintenance quite seriously. There are several tasks that have to be completed – providing you with the source code, project documents, handling feedback and most critically site maintenance.

This is critical as users’ feedback has to be incorporated and new updates added regularly. Web Development is a time-consuming and often daunting task in case of large and complex websites. However, over the years we have been able to successfully complete and make live a large number of websites. This has been possible for primarily two reasons. One is the expertise of our web designers and developers and the next is the advanced techniques and technologies along with a transparent process that we use for structuring websites.
